Increase in meat production

120 600 tonnes of meat from domestic animal production were approved for human consumption during the first six months of 2002, an increase of 900 tonnes compared with the same period last year.

50 400 tonnes of pork, 44 200 tonnes of beef and veal and 44 200 tonnes of poultry were approved during the first half year of 2002. Compared with the first six months of 2001, the production of meat from sheep, poultry and cattle increased by 9.8 and 2 per cent respectively, while the production of other types of meat decreased.

Pig accounted for 42 per cent of the approved carcasses during the first half year of 2002, beef 37 per cent and poultry 19 per cent.

Compared with the first half year of 1998, the overall meat production increased with 3 500 tonnes. The increase of poultry alone was 7 200 tonnes, or 47 per cent. Mutton increased with 370 tonnes, while beef and pork decreased with 7 and 1 per cent respectively.
