Minor changes in production of meat

A total of 121 000 tonnes of meat from domestic animal production were approved for human consumption during the first six months of 2003, an increase of 0.5 per cent compared with the same period the previous year.

50 700 tonnes of pork, 42 700 tonnes of beef and veal, 2 800 tonnes of mutton and lamb and 24 600 tonnes of poultry were approved during the first half year 2003. Compared with the first half year 2002, the number of slaughtered pork and poultry increased, while the number of cattle and sheep decreased.

Pork accounted for 42 per cent of the approved carcasses during the first half year of 2003, beef 35 per cent and poultry 20 per cent.

Compared with the first half year of 1998, the overall meat production increased with 4 200 tonnes. The increase of poultry alone was 9 300 tonnes, or 60 per cent.
