More members in religious and life stance communities

At the beginning of this year, 622 000 persons were members of religious and life stance communities. This represents 12 per cent of the Norwegian population.

A total of 11.9 per cent were members of religious and life stance communities outside the Church of Norway as per 1 January 2016. This is an increase from 10.8 per cent last year.
More than half of the members; 349 000, were members of Christian communities. In particular, the Roman Catholic Church has increased the number of members from the previous year, by a total of 49 000 or 51 per cent.
Furthermore, various Islamic communities accounted for around 24 per cent of the members, while the members of Buddhist communities accounted for 3 per cent, and life stance communities and other religions accounted for 14.4 per cent and 2.6 per cent of the members respectively.
