Four new national parks in 2006

Today, about 14 per cent of Norway’s total land area is protected by the nature conservation act. This equals to 46 170 square kilometres. National parks constitute to 58 per cent of the total protected area, and have increased with 5 823 square kilometres last year. In 2006, four new parks were established

All in all, Norway now has 29 national parks. These are Reinheimen, Varangerhalvøya, Seiland and Hallingskarvet.

Regional differences

The counties Finnmark and Oppland have the greatest protected areas in all, with respectively5 411 and 5 365 square kilometres. 9 out of 19 counties do not have national parks. Møre and Romsdal and Oppland have the largest share of protected areas, with respectively 25 and 21 per cent of their total land area.

Lesja and Saltdal are the municipalities with most areas protected by the nature conservation act, with 1 718 and 1 412 square kilometres.

Other protected areas

Protected areas consists of national parks, nature reserves, landscape protected areas and other area protections. Nature reserves and other protected areas are the most numerous, but in spite of their numbers they do not sum up to large areas. There are relatively few landscape protected areas, but they constitute for a large share of the protected areas.

In addition to four new national parks, there were established 15 new landscape protected areas, one new nature relic, 37 new nature reserves and 20 other protected areas.

About the figures

Number and area of protected areas are based upon digital maps for protected areas from the Directorate for Nature Conservation. Digital maps for protected areas have been analysed with geographical overlay with digital maps for administrative boundaries.

Figures for municipalities and counties are available in the StatBank. Aggregation of area figures from different geographical levels may give deviating sums. Some protected areas might cross both municipal and county borders; sums from different geographical levels will hence deviate.

Change in area for each protected area, or the distribution at municipal or county level, may be due to enhanced quality of delineation of protected areas.
