Both the total turnover and the number of employees increased for companies involved in sewage and refuse disposal, sanitation and similar activities.

The 878 local kind-of-activity-units (KAUs) involved in sewage and refuse disposal, sanitation and similar activities had a total turnover of NOK 9.7 billion in 2004, an increase of 11 per cent from 2003. Employment in the sector also increased in this period, by 8.3 per cent to 6 005 people in 2004.

The gross investment in the industry was NOK 1 billion in 2004.

Businesses involved in the collection and treatment of other waste represented about 90 per cent of the total turnover within sewage and refuse disposal. The 408 local KAUs within this industry class experienced a growth in turnover of 8.2 per cent from 2003 to 2004, up to NOK 8.5 billion in 2004. The number of people employed increased by 6.8 per cent from 4 693 in 2003 to 5 014 people in 2004.

The local KAUs within sanitation, remediation and similar activities also experienced a growth in turnover from 2003 to 2004, more precisely an increase of 8.4 per cent up to NOK 291 million. The industry consisted of 335 local KAUs in 2004, and these employed a total of 345 people.

The industry class collection and treatment of sewage had a total turnover of NOK 891 million in 2004, and the 135 local KAUs employed a total of 646 people the same year.

Local KAUs and enterprises

The structural statistics are published on both enterprise and local KAU level. The figures on the enterprise level may differ from those on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered in one industry group after main activity, while at the same time consisting of local KAUs in other groups.
