Tax payments up 15.6 per cent in 2008

In 2008, total tax payments amounted to NOK 755.4 billion. This is an increase of NOK 102 billion or 15.6 per cent compared to 2007.

The strong growth is mainly due to a growth in petroleum taxes of NOK 53.2 billion or 28.2 per cent. Total tax on the extraction of petroleum was NOK 242 billion. Tax payments excluding petroleum taxes went up by NOK 48.8 billion or 10.5 per cent compared to 2007.

Paid and distributed taxes, by county. Change in per cent, January-December, 2006-2007 and 2007-2008

Ordinary taxes to municipalities constituted NOK 102.4 billion. This is an increase of NOK 5.6 billion or 5.8 per cent compared to 2007. Taxes paid to county municipalities increased by 4.9 per cent to NOK 20.7 billion.

Contributions to the National Insurance Scheme totalled NOK 198.3 billion. NOK 115 billion of this amount was employer contributions and NOK 83.2 billion was member contributions; an increase of 11 and 11.6 per cent respectively compared to 2007.

Due to the implementation of a new tax reporting system (SOFIE) at the Directorate of Taxes, Statistics Norway has not been able to produce a table for tax revenues by type.

Some new features of the new reporting system are that the tax account statistics now also include tax revenue from Svalbard. Statistics Norway is only able to present total tax revenue for Svalbard, and cannot specify different types of taxes.

Statistics Norway has also chosen to present four new tax variables: Surtax on gross income, Community tax, Special tax on petroleum income and Ordinary income tax on petroleum revenue. These figures can be found in StatBank. As before, these figures are accumulated under the variable "Remainder" in the tables.

Due to the said changes, Statistics Norway has created a new time series for the Tax account statistics in StatBank starting from August 2008. The previous figures can be found in tables 03728 and 05284.
