Sharp increase in government expenditures

In first quarter 2002, the Central government fiscal account including the National Insurance Scheme shows an increase in total expenditures of approximately NOK 28 billion, or 22 per cent, compared with the same period last year.

In the first quarter 2002, government expenditures were 157 billion, compared with 129 billion in the first quarter 2001. The sharp increase in expenditures reflects the change in ownership of public hospitals from local to central government.

Revenues down

The Central government fiscal account including the National Insurance Scheme shows a decrease in total revenues of 6 per cent. In the first quarter 2002, the government revenues were NOK 129 billion, compared with NOK 137 billion in the first quarter 2001. The decrease in the government revenues is a result of reduced oil price in this period, which is also reflected in the operating surplus in extraction of petroleum. The operating surplus from the state-owned petroleum activities was about NOK 14.6 billion in the first quarter 2002, compared with NOK 26 billion in the corresponding quarter 2001. This is a decrease of approximately 44 per cent.
