Moderate increase in government revenue

In the first quarter 2005, the Central government fiscal account shows total revenue of NOK 139 billion. This corresponds to a 7.5 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, when revenues totalled NOK 129 billion.

The growth in government income is mainly due to increased tax revenues. Increased operating surplus from extraction of petroleum also contributes to the increase.

Slight increase in expenditures

Central government expenditure increased by 0.7 per cent compared with the first quarter 2004, when the expenditures amounted to NOK 160 billion. Table 2, Expenditure by programme category, shows a reduction in "Defense and civilian preparedness" as well as "General transfers to municipalities and county municipalities". The expenditure categories "Economic affairs, energy, trade and shipping" and "Other purposes including interest payments" show an increase.

The central government deficit before transfers to the petroleum fund amounted to NOK 22 billion first quarter 2005, compared to a deficit of NOK 31 billion first quarter 2004.
