Increased government surplus

The central government surplus before net transfers to the Government Pension Fund - Global totalled NOK 404 billion in 2008. This is an increase of NOK 89 billion compared with 2007 when the surplus amounted to NOK 315 billion.

Central government revenue totalled NOK 1 182.6 billion in 2008. This is NOK 152.5 billion more than in 2007; an increase of 14.8 per cent. The largest contribution to increased revenues in 2008 was tax revenues, which amounted to NOK 719.6 billion in 2008. A significant part of this was tax revenues from central government petroleum activity.

In 2008, total expenditure in the fiscal account, excluding transfers to the National insurance scheme, amounted to NOK 513.6 billion. This is an increase of 9.7 per cent compared with 2007. Increased transfers to local government and other state accounts contributed to the increased expenditures. Wages and salaries increased by 7.9 per cent compared with 2007 and amounted to NOK 57.5 billion.

Transfers to the National insurance scheme amounted to NOK 265 billion in 2008. This is NOK 18 billion, or 7.3 per cent more than in 2007.
