Construction cost index for road construction, Q2 2004

As a result of a sharp increase in steel prices, construction costs of concrete bridges rose by 3.8 per cent from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2004. In the same period, costs of road constructions and rock tunnels increased by 2.1 and 1.3 per cent respectively. Maintenance costs for roads increased by 1.4 per cent.

New indices for open air roads and rock tunnels

From the first quarter of 2004, two new indices are published. These are the construction cost index for open air roads and the construction cost index for rock tunnels. The construction cost index for bridges and quays has been replaced by the index for concrete bridges.

The name of the index has been changed from the construction cost index for main road and provincial road to the construction cost index, road constructions. The index is weighted as follows: open air roads 59 per cent, rock tunnels 19 per cent and concrete bridges 22 per cent.

Construction cost index for road maintenance

From the first quarter of 2004, the number of maintenance indices has been reduced to three, i.e. the maintenance of roads total index, the index for asphalt work and the index for winter maintenance. The asphalt work and winter maintenance indices are included in the total index of maintenance with weights of 24 and 28 per cent respectively.

New basis

The indices are calculated using the first quarter of 2004 as the base period. Previous figures have been recalculated according to the new base period.
