Construction costs for roads up 4.6 per cent

The construction costs of roads rose by 4.6 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2005 to the fourth quarter of 2006. Material costs increased by 5.0 per cent in the same period.

Dissemination of the first quarter 2007 is postponed due to missing data in the machinery index. Time for dissemination will be announced in the Advance release calendar when determined.

From the third to the fourth quarter last year, the construction costs of roads rose by 1.4 per cent, while the material costs increased by 1.0 per cent.

The construction costs of concrete bridges rose the most last year, and are 6.7 per cent higher compared with fourth quarter of 2005. Most of the increase can be explained due to increased steel prices. In the same period, the costs of rock tunnels and open air roads increased by 4.8 and 3.7 per cent respectively

The maintenance costs of roads increased by 4.3 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2005 to the fourth quarter of 2006. The costs of asphalt work rose by 3.4 per cent, while the costs of maintenance in wintertime increased by 4.2 per cent in the same period.
