Higher costs for road construction
Road construction costs increased by 1.2 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2013 to the first quarter of 2014. Machinery costs rose by 1.8 per cent, while material and labour costs increased by 1.4 and 1.1 per cent respectively in the same period.

The construction costs of open air roads rose by 1.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2014. In the same period, the costs of rock tunnels and concrete bridges increased by 1.2 and 0.9 per cent respectively. From the first quarter of 2013 to the first quarter of 2014, the total road construction costs rose by 2.9 per cent.
Road maintenance costs increased by 1.1 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2013 to the first quarter of 2014, and are 3.5 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2013.
