Reduced road construction costs
Road construction costs were reduced by 0.4 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2016. Material and machinery costs were reduced by 1.2 and 1.4 per cent respectively, while labour costs increased by 0.2 per cent in the same period.

It is the costs associated with the construction of open roads that contributes to the overall reduction in road construction. Construction costs for open roads fell by 1.0 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 due to reduced material costs. Construction costs of concrete bridges and rock tunnels showed an increase of 0.4 and 0.3 per cent respectively in the same quarter.
Over the past year, the construction costs of concrete bridges and rock tunnels have both risen by 2.0 per cent. Costs for open roads rose by 0.8 per cent in the same period.
Less expensive maintenance of roads
Road maintenance costs decreased by 1.5 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2016, but were 0.4 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2015.
