Construction costs up 3.2 per cent

The construction cost of residential buildings in Norway increased by a total of 3.2 per cent from March 1999 to March 2000. Material costs rose by 2.7 per cent in the same period. The difference between detached homes and blocks of flats was small. The cost of hiring electricians and plumbers increased the most.

Over the course of the past year the subindex for electrical work increased by 7.6 per cent for detached homes and 7.3 per cent for blocks of flats. The subindex for plumbing work increased by 6.4 per cent for detached homes and 6.1 per cent for blocks of flats. This was significantly more than the other subindices, which rose between two and three per cent.

Overall construction costs for residential buildings rose 0.3 per cent from February to March 2000. Material costs also increased by 0.3 per cent in this period. In addition to increased material costs, wage statistics for fourth quarter 1999 were included in the building cost index for March. Plumbing costs rose the most from February to March 2000, by 1.2 and 1.5 per cent respectively for detached houses and blocks of flats.
