Small decrease in construction costs

The index of residential buildings decreased by 0.1 per cent from April to May this year. Material costs increased by 0.1 per cent in the same period.

The construction costs of multi-dwelling houses decreased 0.4 per cent last month while detached houses remained unchanged. Material costs of multi-dwelling houses increased by 0.1 per cent in the same period.

On an annual basis, the construction costs of residential buildings rose by 3.1 per cent. Material costs rose by 2.2 per cent from May last year to May this year.

Wage statistics for first quarter 2003 are included and contributed to an increase of labour costs by 0.6 per cent in May compared with April this year.
