Minor changes in construction costs

The construction costs of residential buildings rose by 0.2 per cent from April to May this year. The material costs increased by 0.1 per cent in the same period.

Wage statistics for the first quarter of 2008 are included in the construction cost index for May 2008, and contributed to a labour cost increase by 0.4 per cent from April to May.

The construction costs of multi-dwelling houses increased the most last month, by 0.4 per cent, while the construction costs of detached houses of wood rose by 0.2 per cent. The overall increase was 0.2 per cent.

The total material costs increased by 0.1 per cent the last month. The material costs of multi-dwelling houses increased by 0.3 per cent, while those of detached houses of wood decreased by 0.1 per cent.

Twelve-month growth: 5.5 per cent

From May last year to May this year, the construction costs of residential buildings rose by 5.5 per cent. The construction costs of multi-dwelling houses and detached houses of wood increased by 6 and 5 per cent respectively.
