Steeper increase in consultancy prices

Prices of computer consultancy services increased by 2.2 per cent during the first quarter this year, a considerably higher growth than in the previous quarter. The year-on-year increase is 5.3 per cent. Prices charged by consultants with relatively low competence increase the most.

Prices of computer consultancy services increased by 5.3 per cent from the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008. From the fourth quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008, the increase was 2.2 per cent. In comparison, prices increased by only 0.3 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2007.

The sub-index for IT architects and advisers had the largest increase from the previous quarter with about 3.5 per cent. The index for IT architects has had the largest increase over the past year with 7.9 per cent.

Considering the price changes for different levels of competence, the strongest increase was seen for those with the lowest level of competence. This is true both for the quarterly changes and the year-on year changes. During the first quarter of 2008 the prices charged by those consultants with the lowest level of competence increased by 4.2 per cent. From the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008, the increase was 8.6 per cent for the same group. In comparison, the prices charged by computer consultants with the highest competence level only increased by 3.3 per cent.

The four competence levels are defined by education and work experience.

Level 1: Education within the field and up to one year of experience.

Level 2: Education within the field and between one and three years of experience.

Level 3: At least three years of education and more than eight years of experience.

Level 4: Expert competence and at least seven to twelve years of experience.
