Prices of new detached houses flattening out

Prices of new detached houses increased by 0.3 per cent from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 2009, and compared with the fourth quarter of 2008 prices increased by 1.0 per cent.

Prices of new detached houses increased by 1.0 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the fourth quarter of 2009. In comparison, the contractors’ construction costs have increased by 2.3 per cent during the same period, according to Statistics Norway's construction cost index for detached houses of wood.

Annual growth 3.6 per cent

From 2008 to 2009, the annual price index for new detached houses increased by 3.1 per cent. This is based on the average of the quarterly indices.

A total of 601 observations were used in the calculation of the index in the third quarter.

Data sources

The data for calculating the price index are obtained from two different sources: Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB), and a quarterly survey. The GAB provides information on dwellings completed during the reference period; location, utility floor space and who the owner is. Through the survey, Statistics Norway collects information about prices and quality characteristics that can have an influence on the price.
