Slow growth in freight transport
Prices of freight transport by road in Norway increased by 1.0 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2008.
The industry experienced a 1.0 per cent price hike in the fourth quarter of 2008. The indices for transport of petroleum products and other liquids and gases have had the largest increase among the sub indices, with 2.3 and 2.0 per cent respectively. On the other hand, frozen or refrigerated goods and mixed gods increased only by 1.4 and 1.0 per cent respectively.
The index shows the price development for freight transport by road as a whole, as well as for six different freight types.
The annual growth in prices for the industry as a whole was 8.9 per cent. Like wise, Compared to the corresponding quarter in the previous year, the sub-index for petroleum products had the highest annual price rise. This sub-index grew by 14.9 per cent, while the growth rate for the rest of the sub-indices lies between 7.4 and 9.4 per cent.
The sub-indices show the price development for transportation of the following products: Frozen or refrigerated goods, petroleum products, other liquids or gases in bulk, mixed goods/container goods, dry goods in bulk and other transportation in special vehicles. The sub-indices are weighted together in the main index using the industry turnover distributed by freight types as weights. Mixed goods/container goods is the largest freight type in terms of turnover, and accounts for 45 per cent of the total industry turnover. Other liquids or gases in bulk is the smallest freight type, with 2.4 per cent of the total turnover. |
Important announcement: New classification being implemented shortlyAs of the 1st quarter of 2009, a new version of Norwegian industry classification (SIC 2007) will be used. The classification is in accordance with the EC’s new NACE rev. 2 classification. This enables comparability across borders. The price index for Freight transport by road will be published together with all the price indices in the section for “Transport and Storage”.
