Steady price growth for freight transport by road
Statistics Norway is publishing a new price index for freight transport by road. The first publication covers statistics from the fourth quarter of 2004 to the third quarter of 2006. Since the 4th quarter of 2004, the prices have increased by 6.6 per cent.
The main index shows a steady growth in prices without large seasonal variations. In 2005 the prices rose by 2.7 per cent. So far the index indicates a larger growth in 2006. From the first to the third quarter this year there is a 3.8 per cent rise in prices. The largest quarterly price increase was on 1.6 per cent and took place between the second and the third quarter this year.
The index shows the price trend for the industry as a whole, as well as the price trends for the transportation of six different types of freight. Transportation of mixed goods/container goods has experienced the largest growth since the fourth quarter of 2004, a 7 per cent rise in prices. The sub-index for petroleum products indicates a seasonal swing in prices between the 2nd and the 3rd quarter every year.
New statistics
The main index is made up by six sub-indices. The sub-indices show the price trend for transportation of the following products: Frozen or refrigerated goods, petroleum products, other liquids or gases in bulk, mixed goods/container goods, dry goods in bulk and other transportation in special vehicle.
The sub-indices are weighted together in the main index using the industry turnover distributed on freight types as weights. The freight type mixed goods/container goods makes up for the largest part of the industry turnover, with almost a 45 per cent share. Other liquids or gases in bulk are the smallest freight type with 2.4 per cent of the total turnover.
