Harmonized index up 0.7 per cent

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway was 111.9 (1996=100) in January 2001, an increase of 0.7 per cent from December. From January 2000 to January 2001 the HICP increased by 3.1 per cent compared with 2.7 per cent in December.

The increase from December to January is mainly due to higher tariffs on electricity, increased value added tax (VAT) from 23 to 24 per cent and higher rentals for housing. Lower prices of petrol and communications and sales activity on clothing, footwear and furniture moderated the increase from last month.

The annual growth

The HICP for the EEA went up by 2.1 per cent from 1999 to 2000. Ireland, Iceland and Luxembourg have had the highest increase in prices in the EEA, while the United Kingdom and Sweden have had the lowest. The HICP for the European Union (EU) increased by 2.1 per cent from 1999 to 2000.

Increased prices

The prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels have had the strongest annual growth in the EEA in the year 2000. Also the prices of education have increased a great deal.

Higher prices of petroleum highly influenced the increase in the EEA price index of transport.

Lower prices

In the year 2000 the prices of communications have had the strongest decrease in the EEA. The prices of communication have decreased most in Ireland and Greece, while Finland has had a weak increase. In the same period there have also been a decrease in the prices of clothing and footwear. The prices have dropped most in England and Norway, where as Greece and Italy have had the highest increase.

Revised weights in the HICP

The weights in the HICP are revised yearly in January. The Norwegian HICP use annual weight updates based on average expenditure shares for the last 3 years, with data obtained from Statistics Norway annual household budget survey (HBS).
