Harmonized index up 0.9 per cent
The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway was 112.8 (1996=100) in February 2001, an increase of 0.9 per cent from January. From February 2000 to February 2001 the HICP increased by 3.5 per cent compared with 3.1 per cent in January.
The increase from January to February is mainly due to higher tariffs on electricity, increased prices of petrol and higher rentals for housing. The prices of clothing, footwear and furniture also increased after the sales in January.
The HICP for the EEA was 107.3 (1996=100) in January, a decrease of 0.3 per cent from December. The 12-month rate for January was 2.2 per cent. The HICP for the European Monetary Union was 107.3 in January, down 0.1 per cent from December. The year to year growth in January was 2.4 per cent.
Increase and decrease in the EEA
From January 2000 until January 2001 the prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels have increased by 4.4 per cent, while the prices of education went up by 4.0 per cent in the EEA. The prices of hotels, cafes and restaurants increased by 3.3 per cent. In the same period the prices of communication have dropped by 5.3 per cent while clothing and footwear decreased by 0.3 per cent. The Netherlands and Portugal had the highest growth in the EEA with 4.5 and 4.4 respectively.
