Harmonized index up 0.4 per cent

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway was 114.2 (1996=100) in May 2001, an increase of 0.4 per cent from April. From May 2000 to May 2001 the HICP increased by 4.0 per cent compared with 3.6 per cent in April.

The increase from April to May is mainly due to higher prices of petrol, increased prices of food, higher rentals for housing and higher tariffs on electricity. A decrease in the prices of audiovisual equipment and communication pulled in the opposite direction.

The HICP for the EEA was 108.8 (1996=100) in April, an increase of 0.5 per cent from March. The 12-month rate for April was 2.6 per cent. The HICP for the European Monetary Union was 108.8 in April, up 0.5 per cent from March. The year to year growth in April was 2.9 per cent.

Increase and decrease in the EEA

Measured by the year to year growth in April the Netherlands and Portugal had the highest price increase in the EEA by 5.3 and 4.6 per cent respectively. Both in the Netherlands and in Portugal the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages have increased considerably. In the same period the United Kingdom had the lowest price increase by only 1.1 per cent. It is especially the prices of communications and clothing and footwear that have dropped in the United Kingdom, but also prices of transport, furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house have decreased.
