Harmonized index unchanged

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway declined by 0.4 per cent from June 2001 to June 2002. The year-to-year growth in the EEA was 1.8 per cent in May.

The HICP was 113.8 in June (1996=100), unchanged from May.

The decrease in the HICP during the last 12 months is still mainly due to tax reductions in addition to the price developments of petrol and electricity. The HICP showed no change from May to June. The prices of food, package holidays and rentals for housing increased while the prices of electricity, petrol, airline fares and clothing went down. See the Consumer price index for more details.

Change from April to May in the EEA area: Higher food prices

The HICP for the EEA was 111.3 in May, an increase of 0.1 per cent from April. Portugal faced the strongest price increase with 0.8 per cent. In Netherlands the consumer prices decreased by 0.2 per cent.

The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose in the EEA from April to May. Particularly the prices of fruits contributed to the increase. Finland had the largest price increase of food and non-alcoholic beverages. From April to May the prices of clothing and footwear went up as well in the EEA, with Portugal as the largest contributor to the increase. The actual rentals for housing remained unchanged from April to May.

Year-to-year change in the EEA: Only Norway had a decrease

From May 2001 to May 2002 the EEA consumer prices went up by 1.8 per cent. Norway was the only country in the EEA area with decreasing consumer prices. Iceland and Ireland demonstrated growth rates of 6.0 and 5.0 per cent respectively.

From May 2001 to May 2002 the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose in the EEA by 1.9 per cent, mainly due to an increase in prices of fruits. Except for Norway with a price decrease of 6.5 per cent, all the countries in the EEA experienced a price increase of food and non-alcoholic beverages. During the last 12 months the prices of petrol in the EEA have declined. Norway and Iceland had the largest decreases.

In advance, Eurostat estimated the year-to-year change in May in the Euro-zone to 2.0 per cent, which turned out to be the actual price growth. The HICP for the European Union (EU) increased by 1.8 per in May.
