Increased energy prices

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway was 108.1 (1996=100) in December, an increase of 0.2 per cent from November. From December 1998 to December 1999 the HICP increased by 2.7 per cent. The year to year growth in November was 2.6 per cent.

The increase from November to December is due to a rise in petrol prices, increased tariffs on electricity and higher rentals for housing. Higher taxi fares contributed also to the rise. On the other hand the prices of clothing and fruit decreased.

The HICP for the EEA in November was 104.9, an increase of 0.2 per cent from October. From November 1998 to November 1999 the HICP increased by 1.6 per cent.

Lower prices of communications, clothing, footwear, food and non-alcoholic beverages

The prices of communications decreased by 3.4 per cent the last 12 months. This is mainly due to a decline in prices of telephone services. In the same period Norway had a decrease in prices of telephone services by 8.3 per cent. The consumer groups clothing and footwear and food and non-alcoholic beverages have both declined by 0.1 per cent in the EEA. It is especially in Denmark, Ireland and in the United Kingdom that the prices have decreased on clothing and footwear. The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages have declined most in Germany and in the United Kingdom.

Increased prices of services and dutiable goods

The prices of education have risen by 3.8 per cent. Higher prices of petroleum contributed to increased prices of 3.6 per cent on transport. On dutiable goods such as alcoholic beverages prices rose by 3.5 per cent.
