Increase in airline prices

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.5 per cent from January to February 2000. This is due to higher prices of airline tickets and fruit and vegetables. The CPI for February was 104.6 (1998=100) and the year to year growth was 3.2 per cent.

Transport prices increased by 0.9 per cent from January to February this year. This is due to higher prices of airline tickets by 9.9 per cent. The rise is partly caused by increased taxes on airline tickets. Increased prices of fuel have also contributed to higher prices of airline tickets.

The prices of food rose by 1.1 per cent, mainly because of seasonal higher prices in fruit and vegetables.

The prices for kindergartens increased by 2.6 per cent from the last survey (August 1999).

Rentals for housing

Rentals for housing went up by 0.1 per cent from last month. From January 2000 the rentals indicator in the CPI will be published monthly, while previously published quarterly in March, June, September and December. The 12-month rate in February this year is therefore influenced by the fact that rentals for housing in February 1999 remained the same

Fees for dwellings rose by about 6 per cent from January 1999 to January 2000. The rise has been highest in the southern parts of Norway.

Decreased tariffs on electricity

After a continued rise in the tariffs on electricity from August 1999 to January 2000 there was a change from January to February this year when the tariffs on electricity decreased by 1.0 per cent.
