Increase in petrol prices

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.6 per cent from May to June 2000. This is mainly due to a sharp increase in the prices of petrol. The year-to-year growth in June was 3.3 per cent. In May, it was 2.8 per cent.

s08

In June the CPI was 105.6 (1998=100), and in May it was 105.1.

Price change from May to June

The price of petrol rose by 5.5 per cent from the previous month. The petrol products are highly weighted in the CPI, and the price increases of these products are the main contribution factor to the changes in the all-item index.

The prices of products and services connected to recreation and culture increased by 0.8 per cent. This is mainly due to a price increase of package holidays. The prices of audio visual-equipment fell by 0.5 per cent, caused by special offers on television sets.

Year-to-year change

The last 12 months the CPI has increased by 3.3 per cent. The main contributor to this growth rate can be found in the transport sector. The price of 95-octane petrol has risen by 22 per cent from June last year to June this year. A sharp price increase in services within the transport sector has also occurred. The prices of airline tickets have risen by almost 16 per cent, and the changes in the taxi market mentioned above have resulted in a sharp increase.

The prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco have increased by 7.0 per cent. This rise is mainly caused by commodity taxes.

The prices of clothing, telephone services and audio-visual equipment have been falling for several years. Over the last year, the prices of clothing have declined by 5.6 per cent.
