Slight increase in CPI
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.1 per cent from May to June 2005, mainly due to price rise of electricity and some food products. CPI has increased by 1.7 per cent the last 12 months, while CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE) has risen by 1.1 per cent.
The CPI stood at 115.3 (1998=100) in June 2005 compared with 113.4 at the same time last year, an increase of 1.7 per cent. The year-to year growth in CPI-ATE was 1.1 per cent in June, the same as in May.
CPI up 0.1 per cent from May to June
CPI grew by 0.1 per cent from May to June 2005, and the period was in general characterized by relatively small price changes. With a 2.0 per cent increase, the electricity prices were the main contributor to the CPI growth from May to June.
The prices of food also contributed to the increase in CPI from May to June, with a 0.6 per cent rise. The increase was among other things due to a seasonal price rise of fresh vegetables.
The prices of clothing had a downward effect on the CPI growth from May to June, with a price fall of 1.5 per cent.
Transport pulled the CPI upwards
CPI has increased by 1.7 per cent from June 2004 to June 2005. The main contributors to the year-to year growth were transport services and petrol, both with price increase of 6.8 per cent. In particular, prices of passenger transport by air and sea have increased substantially during the last 12 months.
Rentals for housing and costs for owner-occupied housing have increased by 2.1 and 1.9 per cent respectively the last 12 months, and have thereby contributed to the CPI growth. The same applied for the prices of materials for repair and maintenance of dwellings with an increase of 4.2 per cent from June 2004 to June 2005.
With a 6.2 per cent price increase, services connected to recreation and culture also had an upward effect on the CPI growth from June 2004 to June 2005.
The prices of clothing had a downward effect on the CPI growth, falling by 6.4 per cent in the last 12 months. With a 7.3 per cent price decrease, audiovisual equipments also contributed to dampen the CPI increase from June 2004 to June 2005.
Slight increase in the year-to-year growth in CPI
The year-to-year growth in CPI rose from 1.6 per cent in May to 1.7 per cent in June. The increase was mainly due to a price rise of electricity and other fuels in June this year, compared to a decrease in June last year. The petrol prices contributed in the same direction, while airline fares had a downward effect on the increase in the year-to-year growth.
