Increase in construction material costs
The consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.1 per cent from April to May 2007. The main drivers behind the price increase were products related to repair and maintenance of housing as well as petrol prices. From May 2006 to May 2007, the CPI increased by 0.3 per cent while the CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE) increased by 1.4 per cent.
The CPI was 118.3 (1998=100) per May 2007 compared with 117.9 at the same time last year, which is equivalent to a growth of 0.3 per cent, the same as in April. The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.4 per cent in May, unchanged from April.
Higher prices of housing products from April to May
A 2.7 per cent rise in prices of products related to repair and maintenance of housing was the most important factor behind the 0.1 per cent increase in the CPI. Also this month, higher petrol prices contributed to the increase. The price of petrol rose by 2.5 per cent from April to May, and has increased by 9.8 per so far this year.
Other factors that pushed the CPI up this month were food prices, up by 0.4 percent, and furniture prices, up by 0.7 per cent.
Lower electricity prices contributed to offset the growth in the CPI from April to May. Electricity prices, including the cost of electricity transport, fell by 3.7 per cent from last month. The CPI excluding electricity (CPI-AEL) increased by 0.3 per cent from April to May.
Low price growth in the last twelve months
The CPI increased by 0.3 per cent from May 2006 to May 2007. The main contributors to this growth were products and services related to repair and maintenance of housing, which increased by 7.4 per cent. Furthermore, imputed and actual rentals for housing increased by 1.2 and 1.9 per cent respectively.
Other contributors to the year-to-year growth in the CPI were higher prices of various services. Prices of services within recreation and culture as well as restaurant and hotel services increased by 6.6 and 4.5 per cent respectively.
Prices of electricity, including the cost of electricity transport, decreased by 27.5 per cent from May 2006 to May 2007, and contributed strongly to offset the growth in the CPI. Prices of electricity have not been this low since July 2003.
Unchanged year-to-year growth in CPI and CPI-ATE
The consumer price index adjusted for tax changes (CPI-AT) increased by of 0.1 per cent from May 2006 to May 2007. The year-to-year growth in the CPI and CPI-ATE was unchanged from April to May, at 0.3 and 1.4 per cent, respectively.
