CPI up by 0.6 per cent

The CPI rose by 0.6 per cent from August to September 2010, mainly due to increased prices on clothing. From September 2009 to September 2010, the CPI rose by 1.7 per cent, while the CPI-ATE increased by 0.9 per cent.

Consumer price index. 1998 = 100

The consumer price index (CPI) was 128.6 (1998=100) per September 2010, compared to 126.4 at the same time in 2009. This corresponds to a year-to-year growth of 1.7 per cent in September 2010, down by 0.2 percentage points from last month. The year-to year growth in the CPI-ATE was 0.9 per cent, down 0.5 percentage points from August 2010.

Seasonal rise in prices on clothing

From August to September 2010 the CPI rose by 0.6 per cent. Prices on clothing went up by 7.8 per cent from the preceding month following sales activity in July and August, making it the main contributor to the rise in the CPI. Prices on electricity including grid rent increased by 2.5 per cent. Among other factors, airplane fares together with prices on furniture, furnishings and carpets rose from August to September. Prices on education have increased by 2.3 per cent since it was last measured in January.

Several minor price falls, such as on audio visual equipment and products for personal care contributed to dampening the monthly growth.

CPI up 1.7 per cent the last twelve months

Prices on electricity including grid rent rose by 21.2 per cent from September last year, and were an important contributor to the year-to-year growth. Imputed rentals for housing increased by 3.3 per cent in the same period. Prices on recreational and cultural services together with restaurant- and hotel services increased by 6.2 and 3.2 per cent respectively.

A fall in prices on clothing and airplane fares of 6.2 and 14.8 per cent respectively contributed to dampen the growth these last twelve months.

From August to September 2010 the CPI rose by 0.6 per cent, compared to an increase of 0.8 per cent in the same period last year. This led to a fall in the year-to-year growth of 0.2 percentage points from August to September 2010. The fall was mainly caused by a weaker increase in prices on groceries from August to September this year compared to the same period last year. Another contributor was the prices on books, which fell from August to September this year, while increasing in the same period last year. The price development on airplane fares, recreational and cultural services together with clothing also contributed to the decline in the year-to-year growth.

The development on electricity prices including grid rent contributed in the opposite direction due to an increase of 2.5 per cent from August to September this year in contrast to a fall of 4.6 per cent in the same period last year.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE fell by 0.5 percentage points from 1.4 per cent in August to 0.9 per cent in September.
