CPI down 0.1 per cent

The CPI fell by 0.1 per cent from February to March 2012, mainly due to price falls in electricity. The year-to-year growth in the CPI was 0.8 per cent in March, down 0.4 percentage points from February. The CPI-ATE increased by 1.5 per cent in the same period.

Consumer price index. 1998 = 100

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 131.6 (1998=100) as per March 2012, compared with 130.6 in the corresponding period in 2011. This was equivalent to a year-to-year growth of 0.8 per cent in March 2012, down 0.4 percentage points from February. The year-to year growth in the CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE) was 1.5 per cent in March 2012, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.

Lower electricity prices

The CPI fell by 0.1 per cent from February to March 2012. This was mainly due to a price decrease in electricity including grid rent of 10.7 per cent. Higher levels of water in the basins combined with lower demand due to warmer weather are factors behind the development of the electricity prices. The prices of books showed a decrease of 11.9 per cent due to the annual “Mammut” sales.

From February to March 2012, the prices of clothing and footwear increased by 5.2 per cent. All of the sub-groups of clothing and footwear showed increased prices this month as a result of continued growth after previous sales activity. Airline fares together with the prices of fuels and lubricants rose by 9.0 and 1.8 per cent respectively.

CPI increased by 0.8 per cent the last twelve months

The CPI rose by 0.8 per cent from March 2011 to March 2012. The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages together with operation of personal transport equipment contributed the most, with increases of 2.2 and 4.6 per cent respectively. Imputed rentals of owner-occupiers rose by 1.6 per cent in the same period. Other contributors to the growth were transport services, actual charges for financial services, restaurant services together with alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

The prices of electricity including grid rent decreased by 24.1 per cent and dampened the year-to-year growth. In the same period, the prices of audio-visual equipment and telephone services fell by 5.9 and 5.5 per cent respectively.

Decreased year-to-year growth from February

The year-to-year growth in the CPI fell from 1.2 per cent in February to 0.8 per cent in March 2012, mainly due to the price development of electricity. The prices of electricity including grid rent fell by 10.7 per cent from February to March 2012 compared to a price fall of 3.0 per cent in the same period last year.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.5 per cent in March 2012, up 0.2 percentage points from February 2012.
