Lower electricity prices

The CPI fell by 0.5 per cent from May to June 2012, mainly caused by a fall in electricity prices. The year-to-year growth in the CPI was 0.5 per cent in June, while the CPI-ATE increased by 1.2 per cent in the same period.

Consumer price index. 1998=100

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 131.1 (1998=100) as per June 2012, compared with 130.5 in the corresponding period in 2011. This was equivalent to a year-to-year growth of 0.5 per cent in June 2012, equal to the year-to-year growth of May. The year-to year growth in the CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE) was 1.2 per cent in June 2012, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.

Electricity prices pulled CPI down

The CPI fell 0.5 per cent from May to June 2012. Electricity including grid had a price fall of 4.2 per cent, largely due to higher levels of water in the basins after a mild winter and heavy rain in June. After the price reduction this month, the electricity prices are at the lowest level since June 2008. The price of furniture and furnishings was reduced by 4.8 per cent from May to June, while clothing prices fell by 2.1 per cent in the same period. The decrease in prices can be attributed to sales within the two consumption groups. Other consumption groups that contributed to the decline in the CPI were the prices of fuel and lubricants, food and audio-visual equipment.

Books pulled the index in the opposite direction with a price increase of 7.9 per cent from May to June.

CPI up 0.5 per cent in the last twelve months

The CPI rose by 0.5 per cent from June 2011 to June 2012. Food and non-alcoholic beverages showed a price increase of 2.2 per cent in this period. Imputed rentals for owner-occupiers went up by 1.6 per cent. The prices of restaurant services and actual charges for financial services rose by 4.2 and 6.2 per cent respectively. Other consumption groups behind the growth were the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco along with operation of personal transport equipment.

The year-to-year growth was mainly dampened by the 24.2 per cent fall in prices of electricity including grid from June 2011 to June 2012. A reduction in prices was also registered for audio-visual equipment and telephone services.

Changed year-to-year growth

The year-to-year growth in the CPI was unchanged from May to June. The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.2 per cent in June, down 0.2 percentage points from May 2012. This was mainly due to the changes in airline fares and furniture and furnishings prices.
