Decreased consumer prices

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) went down 0.3 per cent from June to July 1999. The decrease is due to clothing sales, reduced tariff on electricity, telephone services and hotel stays. The price of gasoline went up.

The CPI for July 1999 was 281,7 (1979=100) and the year to year growth was 2.0 per cent. In June the year to year growth was 2.4 per cent.

Prices on clothes and shoes decreased by 3.5 per cent from June to July. The price reduction is due to the summer sale. The sale includes mainly summer clothes.

Electricity prices to households dropped 2.6 per cent. The prices are now almost 7 per cent lower than the level in July last year. Prices on telephone services went down 3 per cent from June to July. This is due to a structured change of the zones. Summer prices on the hotel stays were also a contributor to the decrease in the CPI.

The gasoline prices increased by 2 per cent on average from June to July. The gasoline prices have increased by almost 7 per cent the last 12 months.
