Increased taxes caused higher prices

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0,5 from December 1999 to January 2000. This is due to higher taxes and rentals for housing. Sales activity of clothing and furniture moderated the increase from last month. The CPI for January 2000 was 104.1 (1998=100) and the year to year growth was 2.9 per cent.

The tariffs on electricity to private households rose by 7.3 per cent from December 1999 to January 2000 mostly due to the increase in the consumption tax in electricity.

Rentals for housing went up by 1.3 per cent from last month. From January 2000 the rentals indicators in the CPI will be published monthly, while previous published quarterly in March, June, September and December. In January the 12-month rate of rentals is nearly 5 per cent. This is however influenced by the change from quarterly to monthly publishing. The 12-month rate would have been around 3 per cent if the rentals still were published quarterly.

The prices of tobacco and alcohol increased by 8.5 and 1.8 per cent caused by the rise of the commodities taxes. Prices of transport, insurance, dental and day-care services also increased from last month.

The increase in the CPI from December 1999 to January 2000 was moderated by a drop in the prices of clothing, furniture and household appliances due to the traditional January year sale.
