Strong rent increase for small dwellings

From the second quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2008, the average monthly rent for a one room dwelling rose by 8.8 per cent. The average rent increase for all rental dwellings was 5.6 per cent in the same period.

According to the rental market survey, the rent for one room dwellings increased more than any other kind of dwelling in the Norwegian rental market. From the second quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2008, the average monthly rent for this kind of dwellings rose by 8.8 per cent. The rent for four-room dwellings also showed an increase above the average in the same period. Dwellings with two rooms showed the lowest average rent increase. The rental market survey covers both old and new tenancy agreements.

Tenants in the area of Oslo and Bærum faced the highest average rent and paid on average NOK 6 847 in the second quarter of 2008.This is an increase of 3.2 per cent from the same quarter last year.

The rental market survey shows that tenants on average paid a monthly rent of NOK 5 052 for a dwelling in the second quarter of 2008.
