Continued Increase in Prices of Mineral Fuels

Increasing prices of crude oil and products continues to be the main contributor to the rise in the Price Index of First-hand Domestic Transactions. The total index climbed 0.2 per cent from July to August, while the 12-month rate (August 1998 to August 1999) was 2.1 per cent.

The month to month increase in mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials fell to 1.3 per cent in August after reaching 4.0 per cent in July. Despite the fall, higher prices of crude oil in August together with increased prices of refined oil products, remain the large contributors to the rise in the total index. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials in general showed a sharper increase from July to August than during the same period last year thereby rising the 12-month rate to 10.7 per cent, after 9.1 per cent last month.

Most of the main groups in the total index showed an increase from July to August with a decrease of 0.7 per cent in food as the sole exception. The drop in food is mainly due to the opening of the autumn slaughtering and the harvesting season. In addition there was a decrease in prices both of imported fruits, and fish products in general.

According to end use the price of consumer goods decreased by 0.1 per cent compared with the July prices. Investments showed only minor changes.
