Increase in Prices of Mineral Fuels

The total index showed a 0.3 per cent increase compared with last month's figures. Imported goods, particularly mineral fuels and crude materials, represented the largest growth in prices. From May 1999 to May 2000 (12-month rate) the total index rose 4.2 per cent.

The prices of refined oil products rose from April to May. The increase could be traced both to imported goods and domestic transactions. This, in addition to rising prices of other oil products, caused the group mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials to rise 0.6 per cent after falling 3.9 per cent last month. Crude materials, inedible, except fuels, showed a 1.4 per cent increase compared with April. This was mainly due to a rise in import prices, which showed stronger growth than domestic goods.

Food

Food prices increased by 0.4 per cent from April to May partly due to seasonal effects. The largest contributions to the changes in food prices came from imported goods. The 12-month rate has been negative since last May and this month was no exception. Food prices were 1.1 per cent lower than in same period last year.

End-use

The prices of consumer goods showed a 0.4 per cent increase compared with last month, while the 12-month rate changed from 1.8 per cent in April to 1.9 per cent in May.
