Higher fuel prices

The total index increased by 0.2 per cent from July to August, mainly due to higher prices in the group mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. The 12-month rate (August 1999 - August 2000) for the total index was 4.1 per cent like last month.

The group mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials had the largest impact on the total index due to its 1.0 per cent rise from July to August. However, the 12-month rate fell from 11.1 per cent in July to 10.7 per cent in August. The rise in the prices of imported refined oil products contributed the most within this group.

Cheaper food

The change from July to August in this group nearly balanced the entire contribution from the slightly smaller group mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. The prices of food and livestock declined by 0.8 per cent from July to August, a slightly larger decline than its 0.7 per cent last year. Thus the 12-month rate changed from 0.2 in July to 0.1 per cent in August.

Classified after end use

Goods for consumption declined by 0.3 per cent after a 0.2 increase the previous period. The prices of investment goods increased by 0.2 per cent, slightly more than the 0.1 per cent increase from June to July.
