Prices of petroleum products down

The price index of first-hand domestic sales decreased by 0.5 per cent from February to March. The largest decline (in price) occurred in the group mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials.

The 12-month rate (March 2000 - March 2001) of the total index was 3.8 per cent.

Price Development from February to March

Prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials went down 3.5 per cent. The main reason for the decrease was a 6.0 per cent reduction in prices of petroleum and petroleum products. Products in the group manufactured goods classified by material showed a 0.6 per cent decline, mainly due to lower prices of non-ferrous metals.

The greatest upward pull, by far, came from a 0.9 per cent rise in prices of food.

The 12-month rate

The overall 12-month rate was 3.8 per cent in March. Higher prices of fish, meat and products thereof were the main underlying factors as food prices went up 4.9 per cent. Manufactured goods classified by materials rose by 4.3 per cent. Behind this increase was a strengthening of the price of paper and paperboard. Crude materials went up 8.2 per cent due to increased prices in the group metalliferous ores and metal scrap.

Changes in the 12-month rate

The 12-month rate went from 6.0 per cent to 3.4 per cent in March. The overall change was mainly caused by lower prices of petroleum and petroleum products. In addition the growth in price of crude materials was very moderate from February to March this year compared with same period last year.
