Slight increase in prices

The total index rose by 0.2 per cent from November to December. Prices of crude materials rose by 0.6 per cent, while prices for commodities in the group mineral fuels, lubricants and related material showed a slight increase.

For the first time since May, prices of crude materials increased, as was the case for the most important products in this group. An exception was wood, lumber and cork, where prices decreased by 0.1 per cent. Prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related material rose by 0.2 per cent. This increase was mainly due to higher prices of electric current.

The other main groups showed only minor changes.

The 12-month rate, December 2000 - December 2001

The overall 12-month rate was - 4.8 per cent. In this period prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related material decreased by about 21 per cent, while crude materials decreased by more than 11 per cent. The decline in the former group was due to lower prices of petroleum and petroleum products, while electric current increased by 19 per cent in this period. Manufactured goods decreased by 3.7 per cent, mainly due to lower prices of metals and products thereof.

Prices in the groups food and machinery and transport equipment increased the most. Prices in both groups rose about 3 per cent.

Changes in the 12-month rate

After showing decline since April, the overall 12-month rate increased from - 8.8 per cent in November to - 4.8 per cent in December. The main cause for this rise was an increase in prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related material. The latter mentioned group went from - 35 per cent in November to - 21.1 per cent in December.

The 12-month rate of food went from 3.7 per cent in November to 3.2 per cent in December.
