Increase in domestic prices

The total index rose by 0.8 per cent from December 2001 to January 2002. The main reason for this was higher prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, but lower prices crude material counteracted this effect.

In the first month of this year the prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials showed an increase of 3.8 per cent. The increase was due to higher prices of petroleum and petroleum products and electric current. The increases in these groups were 3.1 and 8.1 per cent respectively. Prices of crude materials went down by 3.0 per cent. The main reason for this was a 6.7 per cent decline in prices of metalliferous ores and metal scrap.

The 12-month rate

The overall 12-month rate was -3.0 per cent. In this period prices of crude materials decreased by 13.8 per cent, while mineral fuels, lubricants and related material decreased by 13.2 per cent. The decline in the former group was due to lower prices of pulp and waste paper, and metalliferous ores and metal scrap. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials decreased due to lower prices of electric current, while petroleum and petroleum products increased by 21.1 per cent.

Changes in the 12-month rate

The overall 12-month rate went from -4.8 per cent in December to -3.0 per cent in January. The main reason for this rise was an increase in prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related material. The other main groups showed only minor changes.
