Electricity prices soaring

The price index of first-hand domestic sales increased by 6.3 per cent from November to December. This was mainly caused by an increase in prices of petroleum and electricity.

Prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials increased by 20 per cent from November to December. Prices of electricity went up 49.2 per cent. Since July these prices have increased by approximately 170 per cent. Petroleum and petroleum products also showed an increase from November, 10.2 per cent. Prices of food products went up 0.1 per cent, while crude materials showed a decrease of 0.4 per cent. Prices of manufactured goods went down too, mainly due to lower prices of iron and steel.

The overall domestic market showed an increase of 7 per cent. Higher prices of energy goods contributed to this development as well.

The 12-month rate: 9.7 per cent increase

The overall 12-month rate was 9.7 per cent. This development was mainly due to higher prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related minerals, where prices now are 38 per cent higher than 12 months ago. The development of the 12-month rate for electricity prices showed a decrease early in 2002 and for several months prices were lower than the year before. The strong price increase at the end of 2002 turned this trend and prices of electricity now show an increase of 126 per cent compared with December 2001.Petroleum and petroleum products increased by 16.5 per cent.

Most main groups showed a decline. Crude materials showed a decrease of 6.4 per cent and prices of food continue to be lower than in 2001.
