Increase in prices of oil and electricity

The price index of first-hand domestic sales increased by 1 per cent from July to August. This was mainly caused by an increase in prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, while lower prices of food counteracted this effect.

Prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials increased by 3.8 per cent from July to August. The increase was due to higher prices of petroleum and petroleum products and electric current. Prices of crude materials rose by 0.5 per cent. Prices of food showed the strongest decline, 0.3 per cent.

The highest figure was recorded for vegetables and fruit, 4.5 per cent, while fish and grain prices went up. The main reason for lower vegetable prices was good conditions for growing vegetables due to good weather. The prices of manufactured goods and chemicals and related products increased by 0.6 and 0.3 per cent.

Prices in the overall domestic market showed an increase of 1.4 per cent. The main reason was the increase in price of energy goods.

The 12-month rate: 9.1 per cent decrease

The overall 12-month rate was 9.1 per cent. The increase was mainly due to higher prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials and crude material. Higher prices of petroleum and petroleum products were the main reason for the increase in the former group.

Food and miscellaneous manufactured articles had an increase of 0.4 per cent and crude materials of 5.7 per cent. This was manly due to a 17 per cent higher price of metalliferous ores and metal scrap.

One decimal from January 2004

Starting with the publishing of January figures all indices will be produced with one decimal. Two decimals give an exaggerated impression of the accuracy of the estimates. In addition we want to harmonize the indices with common practice - where one decimal is used.
