Prices of refined oil products decline

The producer price index remained unchanged from October to November. An increase in the group oil extraction, mining and quarrying was counteracted by a decline in manufacturing prices. The 12-month rate (November 1999 - November 2000) was 6.6 per cent.

The increase within the group oil extraction, mining and quarrying was mainly due to higher prices of crude oil. According to the London Spot Market the average price of Brent Blend rose by about 2.8 per cent from October to November (measured in NOK). The index for this group went up by 1.5 per cent. The 12-month rate showed a decline, from 29.2 per cent in October to 24.9 per cent in November.

Slight fall in manufacturing prices

The largest contribution to this fall can be found in the group chemicals and chemical petroleum, coal, rubber and plastic products. The main cause for this decline of 1.6 per cent from October to November was a fall in prices of refined oil products. On the London Spot Market the average price of unleaded gasoline showed a 10 per cent decline, while prices of heavy fuel oil fell about 8 per cent (measured in NOK). Other groups with a decrease in prices were metals and manufacture of paper and paper products, printing and publishing. According to the London Metal Exchange the price of aluminum has on average decreased by a good 2 per cent from October to September (measured in NOK). The price of nickel has gone down by about 4.5 per cent during the same period. Both manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco, and manufacture of fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment showed a 0.3 per cent increase from October to November.

The index of manufacturing showed a decline of 0.2 per cent. The 12-month rate fell from 5.4 per cent in October, to 4.9 per cent in November.
