Lower prices in information and communication

The prices for data consultant services decreased by 1.4 per cent from the fourth quarter last year to the first quarter this year. The price reduction for telecommunication services was 2.0 per cent in the same period.

From the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009, the prices for telecommunication services decreased by 2.0 per cent. This is mainly due to a price fall in mobile phone services for private households from the beginning of the previous quarter. The prices have been roughly stable for business clients in the same period.

The 1.4 per cent decrease in data consultant service prices from the last quarter was the first decrease registered in this index since it began in 2006. Compared with the same period last year the prices decreased by 0.2 per cent.

New publication routine for price indices for services

These price indices are published from the first quarter of 2009 according to the new classification of activities (SIC2007).The earlier separate publications of price indices for telecommunication services and for data consultant services have been joined in one publication. A new base period for the price indices for services was introduced in the 1st quarter of 2009. The base period is now set to 2006=100, according to Eurostat regulations. The index for data consultant services has been adjusted in all the tables.
