Falling transport prices

The price index for sea transport fell markedly by 8.8 per cent, while the index for freight transport by road declined by 0.2 per cent between the 3r d and 4t h quarter of 2009.

On the other hand, the price index for storage services increased slightly in the same period and measures at 115.3 (2006-prices as base price).

Price indices for industries within transport and storage. 2006=100.

Declining prices for freight transport by road

Within freight transport by road, the transport prices for frozen or refrigerated goods, which declined by 0.4 per cent from the 3r d to the 4t h quarter 2009, contributed mainly to the overall decline in the aggregate index. Transport prices for petroleum products, dry goods in bulk and mixed goods/container goods, remained unaltered, while prices for transport of other gases and liquids rose by 0.2 per cent during the same period. The aggregate index for freight transport by road, measuring at 117.4 for the 4t h quarter of 2009, declined by 0.5 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2008.

Falling prices within freight ocean transport

The price index for ocean transport with goods declined by 8.2 per cent from the 3r d to the 4t h quarter of 2009. The decline is mainly caused by a fall in prices for ocean transport of chemicals and gases.

The aggregate index for sea transport declined by 4.6 per cent in comparison to the same quarter in 2008.

Modest increase in storage prices

In aggregate, the price index for storage services increased modestly, by 0.2 per cent with respect to the previous quarter. Prices for general storage, which grew by 0.5 per cent, contributed mostly for the rise between the 3r d and 4t h quarter of 2009. The index grew by 0.8 per cent relative to the same quarter last year and remains at 115.3.
