Slight increase in manufacturing prices

Prices in manufacturing, mining and quarrying have increased by 0.4 per cent since last month. The price development for food products and basic metals contributed to this.

The prices for food products rose by 0.8 per cent from December to January, as did the prices for basic metals. On the other hand the prices of refined petroleum products and for chemicals decreased slightly.

12-month rate

The 12-month rate (January 2001 - January 2002) for manufacturing, mining and quarrying was, for the sixth month in a row less than zero, -3.1 per cent. Several groups contributed, where the most important one was refined petroleum products. Prices for food products counteracted this, by an increase of 4.6 per cent.

The prices within the group oil and gas extraction were 13.2 per cent lower than in the same period last year.Together with a price increase of almost 23 per cent for electricity, and the 3.1 per cent decrease in manufacturing, mining and quarrying, this resulted in a 6.6 per cent decrease for the total commodity index.

New series and new methods

The commodity price index has been updated with new series and a new method for imputing missing indices at lower aggregates. For more about this, see "About the statistics".
