16 per cent increase in sickness benefits
New statistics for the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) show that the expenditures on sickness benefits have increased by NOK 5 billion in the last year, to NOK 36 billion in 2009. From 2006, the expenditures on sickness benefits increased by NOK 9.5 billion or 35 per cent.
In addition to its own budget, NAV is also responsible for the administration of large public transfers, in the form of social benefits in cash, such as pensions, disability pensions, sickness benefits and unemployment benefits. From 2008 to 2009, benefits increased from NOK 4.4 billion to NOK 9.7 billion.
The total transfers of NAV increased by NOK 29 billion in the last year, to NOK 320 billion.
