46 per cent has established home page

Almost half of all enterprises with at least ten employees and access to Internet had established a home page by the end of 1999. Big enterprises use home pages more than small enterprises.

The share of enterprises with a home page is highest within banking and finance and lowest in retail trade. The biggest share of home pages is found in Oslo, while the share is smallest in the counties Troms, Sogn og Fjordane and Finnmark.

46 per cent of Norwegian enterprises with at least ten employees and access to Internet had established a home page by the end of 1999. The share increased a great deal during the last year and grew from 28 per cent by the end of 1998. According to the enterprise's plans this year will experience an increase in the number of home pages. 28 per cent of the enterprises report that they plan to establish a home page in 2000.

The use of home pages varies a lot with the size of the enterprises. By the end of 1999 69 per cent of the enterprises with 100 employees or more had established a home page. Among enterprises with 10-19 employees the share was only 37 per cent. A limited selection of the smallest enterprises with under ten employees was also included in the survey. Only 25 per cent of the enterprises with access to the Internet in this group reported to have established home pages by the end of 1999.

The share with home page is highest within banking and finance. In this industry 74 per cent of the enterprises had established a home page by the end of 1999. The group "Other services" followed next with 63 per cent. Wholesale and the hotel industry were above the average with respectively 53 and 52 per cent. 41 per cent of enterprises trading with motor vehicles and fuels have established a home page. Within this industry the highest ratio of enterprises is planning home pages in 2000, 40 per cent. The share is lowest in retail trade. Only 21 per cent of the enterprises in retail trade reported that they had established a home page.

In Oslo 61 per cent of the enterprises with at least ten employees and access to Internet had established a home page by the end of 1999. Then followed Telemark and Vest-Agder, both with 57 per cent. The lowest share of home pages is found in Troms, Sogn og Fjordane and Finnmark, with respectively 21, 20 and 15 per cent. In these counties the use of home pages was far lower than elsewhere in Norway. According to the plans for this year respectively 47 and 41 per cent of the enterprises in Troms and Sogn og Fjordane will establish home pages during 2000 and thus diminish the gap to the national average. In Finnmark the enterprise's plans are much less expansive. 17 per cent of the enterprises in the county plan to establish a home page in 2000. That number is clearly below the planned expansion of the national average, 28 per cent. Differences between counties are connected to both structures of industry and the enterprise's size distribution.

Enterprises that have established home pages report little advanced use. The most important area of use is marketing. 92 per cent of the enterprises report that the home page was used for marketing purposes by the end of 1999. At the same time no more than 36 per cent used the opportunity home pages create to receive orders. In addition 29 per cent of the enterprises gave customers and subcontractors access to databases through a home page. Only 6 per cent of the enterprises used the home page to receive payment for goods/services.
