Strong increase in broadband connection
An increasing proportion of enterprises receive Internet access via broadband. Almost half of all enterprises with at least 10 employees had broadband in January 2005. In 2001 less than one fifth were connected to Internet via broadband.
A commonly used definition of broadband is transmission capacity of at least 2 Mbit per second. This survey asked enterprises if they were connected to Internet via various DSL-technologies or other types connections with capacity of ay least 2 Mbit per second. Since 2001 the proportion of enterprises connected to the Internet via broadband has increased by almost 150 per cent. In the same period the proportion of enterprises with wireless connection to Internet more than quadrupled. In this survey the transmission capacity of wireless Internet connections was not specified and included for example the technologies "Fixed Wireless Access", satellite and mobile telephony. Because several enterprises have more than one type of connection to the Internet, proportions of Internet connections do not correspond to the proportion for Internet access.
Broadband less usual among small enterprises
In enterprises with 5-9 employees the distribution of DSL-technologies, other broadband connections and wireless connections was different than among enterprises with at least 10 employees. The most distinct difference was a lower proportion with broadband among small enterprises. In enterprises with 5-9 employees one out of three had Internet access via broadband in January 2005.
Almost all have Internet
The diffusion of Internet access among larger enterprises has reached its saturation. Since 1998 the proportion of enterprises with Internet access increased strongly. In 1998 not more than 40 per cent of the enterprises were connected to the Internet. In January 2005 over 90 per cent of all enterprises with at least ten employees reported that they had Internet access. At the same time 84 per cent of all enterprises with 5-9 employees were connected to the Internet - an increase from 74 per cent in 2004.
Strong growth in sales via Internet
Norwegian enterprises are increasing their Internet sales. In 2004 total sales via Internet among enterprises with at least ten employees came to about NOK 59 billion. In 1999 Internet turnover made up about NOK 9 billion. Since the calculation of Internet turnover is based on observations with great variation, the uncertainty is larger than for results presented in proportions. Uncertainty in the data can bring large yearly fluctuations. In this publication Statistics Norway has not included financial intermediation in the volume of Internet turnover.
Many other European countries produce statistics about ICT usage in enterprises in cooperation with EUs statistical office Eurostat. The plan for this survey is adapted to Eurostat guidelines. Internationally comparable figures can be found:
